After a lot of work by the Motorco Madness volunteers, I am happy to announce this year’s line-up!
We’re so pleased to have The Beast returning as headliners! Now in their tenth year, The Beast is an innovative and electrifying hip hop and jazz ensemble, known for pushing creative boundaries and dynamic collaborations. Not only are there two Powe alumni in the band, Steve is now a Powe parent and Pierce is a Powe uncle!
This year we’ll also be joined by beloved Powe teacher Nancy Middleton (a.k.a. Ms. Laughinghouse)! One of North Carolina’s iconic songwriters, Nancy gained national recognition with her album “The Way I Do.” After making music in Nashville, she returned home to Durham to continue to play her sweet and soulful rock songs.
We’re also excited to have a band with even more recent Powe alumni, Alley Seventeen! This all-girl band incorporates the rhythmic roots of great American music to craft undeniable melodies and engaging lyrical narratives. With influences spanning Etta James, Amy Winehouse, Alabama Shakes, and Vulfpeck.
Powe teacher Latisha Johnson will be performing a poem (Powe-m?) she has composed just for the occasion. And off stage, we’ll be joined again by Durham’s Poetry Fox, who will take your words and spin them into wonderful poems with his trusty typewriter.
Organized by the Powe PTA, Motorco Madness is a family-friendly concert for the Durham community to come together and enjoy local talent while raising money to support our public elementary school. Get lunch next door at Parts & Labor to increase donations.
